As things get colder and rainier, we enter into one of my favorite fishing seasons in the Pacific Northwest, steelhead season!

A conversation yesterday with Jason Tonelli, owner of Pacific Angler, about steelhead jigs caused me to reflect back over many years of steelhead fishing to the evolution of lures and baits.

I acknowledge that some individuals have been fishing jigs for many years; however, it seems to me that only in the last 2 to 3 years have jigs surged to the forefront and prominence at the business end of steelheaders terminal tackle. As proof, Jason informed me that he can not keep jig tying material on the shelves lately. From speaking with other anglers, I understand that a well fished jig is quite deadly! Guess it might be time to add a few jigs to my lure box... right beside the aero fly...

How about other lures that started with a small following and now populate almost every steelheaders gear box? Pink worms, colorado blades and gooey bobs... The evolution of gear is quite amazing, although still hard to beat fresh bait. Even in the bait category, peeled shrimp had its day. I suspect that even old timers were pumping ghost shrimp back in the day; although, if I were a betting man I would wager that more ghost shrimp are being pumped now with the availability of good steelhead roe disappearing...

My opinion on the next big lure fad? Spoons... Their day is nye!

It has been my great pleasure to have boated almost 25 coho already and I am looking forward to another weekend spent chasing these great sport fish off the beach. Nothing makes my heart pound more than watching a school of coho move in front of me finning on the surface with the odd one leaping into the air. Talk about adrenaline as you make that cast just ahead of the school and start a fast retrieve...Line tightens and yet another 10 lb fish races off in the backing with one jump after another!

I learnt the hard way to use saltwater tippet...

Hello Spooled TV lovers!

I have yet to give you an update on some of the highlights of my fishing experiences this past couple months! So let me fill you in..

Ascension Bay was AWESOME! I got to fight some amazingly strong, agile bonefish. ( I had a couple line burns on the fingers) What a feeling of accomplishment when you can say you have caught a few of those guys!! and my favorite, the BARACUDA!! The feeling you get when you see that 13 pound 'cuda spot your fly and instantly dart with its jaws opening under water exposing his razor sharp teeth and WHAM!! Hes gone with your fly in his mouth, your reel left screaming and your heart pumping, its like nothing else!!

What an unforgettable trip…

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 weeks in August salmon fishing (Rivers Inlet and Thasis). All I can say is salmon fishing has picked up tremendously since last year! A great amount of coho, pinks and chinook were landed and a relief that numbers are up is definitely in mind…

The picture I have posted is a 35 pound chinook caught mooching 10 feet down in 230 ft of water…go figure, I was in the middle of letting my line out!

So currently, the pinks and coho are running through the local rivers and there has been quite the fishing frenzy out there. There have been some great hook ups and has been a lot of fun! So saying that, I have been kept busy….

Stay tuned for more stories and pictures!

Jenna
