As proof, Jason informed me that he can not keep jig tying material on the shelves lately. From speaking with other anglers, I understand that a well fished jig is quite deadly! Guess it might be time to add a few jigs to my lure box... right beside the aero fly...

How about other lures that started with a small following and now populate almost every steelheaders gear box? Pink worms, colorado blades and gooey bobs... The evolution of gear is quite amazing, although still hard to beat fresh bait. Even in the bait category, peeled shrimp had its day. I suspect that even old timers were pumping ghost shrimp back in the day; although, if I were a betting man I would wager that more ghost shrimp are being pumped now with the availability of good steelhead roe disappearing...

My opinion on the next big lure fad? Spoons... Their day is nye!

So let me fill you in..

Ascension Bay was AWESOME! I got to fight some amazingly strong, agile bonefish. ( I had a couple line burns on the fingers) What a feeling of accomplishment when you can say you have caught a few of those guys!! and my favorite, the BARACUDA!! The feeling you get when you see that 13 pound 'cuda spot your fly and instantly dart with its jaws opening under water exposing his razor sharp teeth and WHAM!! Hes gone with your fly in his mouth, your reel left screaming and your heart pumping, its like nothing else!!

What an unforgettable trip…

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 weeks in August salmon fishing (Rivers Inlet and Thasis). All I can say is salmon fishing has picked up tremendously since last year! A great amount of coho, pinks and chinook were landed and a relief that numbers are up is definitely in mind…

The picture I have posted is a 35 pound chinook caught mooching 10 feet down in 230 ft of water…go figure, I was in the middle of letting my line out!

So currently, the pinks and coho are running through the local rivers and there has been quite the fishing frenzy out there. There have been some great hook ups and has been a lot of fun! So saying that, I have been kept busy….

Stay tuned for more stories and pictures!

Jenna

Greetings! I am among the many who have great respect for Alexandra Morton and her research regarding the effects of sea lice on wild salmon. What I appreciate about Alexandra is, like any good researcher, she relies on science and the statistical interpretation of scientific data to guide her opinions and statements. I wish the same could be said for the federal and provincial governments...

I my personal opinion, federal and provincial governments have intentionally done away with considering science in decision making processes (especially when it comes to fisheries management) as science is a) expensive, b) not always conclusive, c) doesn't always generate the results wanted or expected and, d) often leads to tough politics! An example of dismissing the role of science in fisheries management is the continued slashing of fisheries stock assessment budgets! That's right... how can you make fundamentally important management decisions without understanding run escapement/recruitment numbers etc?

It is far easier for governments to turn their collective backs on science (eg., Fraser River gravel removal, missing sockeye etc.) and make outlandish claims in the media such as Paul Sprout (DFO) did the other day when he claimed that (rough quote), "salmon farms had nothing to do with the collapse of the sockeye run this year". How do you know Paul? WHERE IS THE SCIENCE/DATA BEHIND THAT STATEMENT? I understand that Alexandra requested that DFO provide the data supporting this claim. To the best of my knowledge, no data has been provided to date.

You know things are getting bad when a high ranking offical from DFO, a federal government agency which is supposed to be managing fisheries for the BENEFIT of all Canadians, is making broad unsubstantiated statement such as this.

In what political back room was it decided that the new plan was to forgo conservation and protection of our wild salmon stocks in favor of big business and economic contribution to federal/provincial coffers? How did this happen that all these high ranking political figures have such a like mind about this?

Things that make you go hmmmm... and $%#&*!

Also interesting, were Dr. Schindler's comments regarding the linkages between MDN and the health of rainbow trout and grayling populations... How about this quote for the above referenced paper... "The entire annual growth of these fish occurs in a four or five week period (during the sockeye spawning migration) and the rest of the year it appears as though the fish are losing mass".

In my mind, this type of information speaks loud and clear regarding the absolute necessity of marine derived nutrients in oligotrophic (nutrient poor) freshwater environments to ensure the continued success of resident populations.

Also makes me think that if we lose our sockeye... there could be a large devastating ripple affect up the food chain... ouch.

LINK TO ARTICLE ON MARINE DERIVED NUTRIENTS

Yet again... Seems this is happening year after year right? What is the problem? The Georgia Strait is a black hole...our local Burmuda triangle. Instead of swallowing ships and airplanes, this one devours fish!

Now considering the importance of wild salmon on the west coast of BC and indeed throughout our province, one would think that the federal and provincial governments would crawing all over themselves to ensure that any potential impediment to wild salmon survival and recruitment would be removed from their path. Makes sense right? Missing fish... well lets use the process of elimination and figure out what the problem is. Nope. Nothing. This type of action, otherwise known as the precautionary principle, is outright ignored.

Now I am not so naive to think that there is a simple solution...although there just might be...we dont know...no one is trying anything!

What about the open net pen fish farms right along the migration route of the sockeye salmon? The farmers themselves are adamant that their farms do not affect the fish, but do we know this for sure? No, no we dont, because they have not been removed or fallowed. Some how science is yet again ignored. The weight of evidence against open net pen fish farms is growing. It is time for action!

Look at the success of the Columbia River system this year! Massive returns! No net pens along those fishes migration route. Alaska, same deal. No net pens along those fishes route either. The USA wouldn't compromise such a valuable resource...

Why are we?

It is time to exercise the precautionary principle and remove salmon farms within Wild Salmon Narrows which are currently threatening Georgia Strait salmon populations. Regardless if empirical evidence of adverse effects of salmon farms on fish is believed to be lacking, as stewards of the resource, the provincial government must act to protect wild salmon and the historic and present role these fish play within our society, economy, and cultural complexion. How can you continue to place the wellfare of BC's most precious resource -wild salmon- at risk for the benefit of offshore companies? Someone in another country is getting rich off the demise of our salmon. Unconscionable!

Furthermore, we do not need salmon diseases, such as those found in Norway, making there way over here to BC. Why can we not learn from other countries mistakes? Once we lose the wild gene pool, we can never get it back... the time to take responsibility and effect change is now!"

Hmmm...recently it has come to my attention that a short video we released (link may follow) recently on YouTube of Tim landing a 14-15lb rainbow (photo in previous post) from a BC Interior lake has caused quite a stir...

Firstly, a kind friend emailed me the other day and advised me that there were some folks (on FLYBC forum) who took strong exception to the lake being named in the opening shot. Upon reading this email I blanched and quickly proceeded to erase the video from YouTube...it had been an honest mistake. I truely just forgot to erase the lake name before posting that version online. The version with the name I had made for Tim as a keepsake... If I pissed anyone off, I truely apologize. A small lake with big trout should remain as quiet as possible to preserve the trophy fishery and I respect those who wish to keep it that way!

Secondly, most people who viewed the video appreciated it for what it was - a fellow angler who happened to get lucky one day and caught the "fish of a life time". They revelled at the sight of such a large beast and used it as fuel to head to a similar trophy lake and run the risk of getting skunked just to have the opportunity to MAYBE hook a trophy fish (anything over 8lbs I'd say). However, there were a few others who were plain sour grapes. I want to address this unsettling issue that is quite prevalent in the fishing community and, I guess, society in general... many people are miserable and find it just too hard to be happy for another angler! What is with that guys! Can we not rally around a fellow angler and simply congratulate him on landing a massive trout!? Why the negative attitude?? The forum chat turned from "wow nice fish!" to "he held it out of the water too long...". WTF? Come on guys...if you hooked that beast, you would be snapping a few photos too!

What you don't know is that Tim was continually giving that fish a "drink"...I just editted out those portions for length purposes!

So, let's think about our attitudes guys... We are all out there enjoying our favorite past-time. Let's focus on the comradery and keep our swollen egos out of it.

Trevor

I know many of you may already be aware of this but anyways...

When tying chrome chironomids I have had some huge success using computer static bag. Simply cut some thin strips, under wrap with a variety of colors, use the color wire you prefer, and bingo. You should have a very productive fly to fish under that indicator. One pattern that has worked for me and a few of my buddies very well is as follows...

- bright green, or forest green thread
- static bag strip
- copper wire
- copper bead
*you can also sub the two copper items with black*

Anyways, I thought I'd type this up as I'm sitting at home staring out the window at the gorgeous 20 plus deg weather!! And I'm not fishing??.... As we speak Welton is chasing 10 pound slabs somewhere in the Interior!!

Tight lines all....

Darren

All the interior lakes are open! some still may have ice, but its game time let the season begin. Gordy and I hit Lundbom Friday May 1st and it was a little challenging. We managed around a dozen fish but it wasn't in full swing. However, we were treated to some really nice hogs. A few nice 3-4lb trout, and two slabs 8 and 12 lbs... yes 12lbs! Gordy hooked that one and it was quite the fish, It looked like a steelhead!. Marquart down the road wasn't hot either, but its only a matter of time. Both those lakes are loaded with shrimp, and the fish were stuffed with them. Early season up until about mid-May we always seem to do well on shrimp for large fish. Anyways good luck!!.. and Ill keep in touch throughout the season. TIGHT LINES!!

Darren

I recently had an empassioned conversation with a few fellow anglers while heading out to do some spey casting the other day... the kind of conversation that got a little heated as we discussed the current state of the fishing resource on BC's coast. Specifically the freshwater salmon and steelhead fisheries.

As a biologist by trade I keep pretty close tabs on what is going on along our coast out of interest from a naturalist (ecological integrity) perspective, as well as a diehard angler.

I am very disturbed by what I am hearing, reading and seeing with my own eyes! I know I am not alone in this...come on, I can see you out there nodding your heads in agreement thinking about how few steelhead or coho you have caught the last few years and how you wish you were out fishing today, but you decided to stay home where it is warm to avoid the disappointment of another blank day on the water (not that I condone that line of thinking :) ).

We have so many issues that affect the state of our resource today; here is a list I compiled:

Aquaculture - Fish farms
Ocean survival - Global warming
Habitat - Riparian integrity, instream complexity, spawning areas
Maintenance of minimum flow requirements
Hydro dams - run of the river hydro Projects (IPP's)
Treaty Allocations
First Nation fisheries
Poaching
Non-indigenous species
Forest practices
Development impacts -stormwater quality and quantity

Just to name a few...if you think about it you could probably even add a few more. What is my point you ask? All except ocean survival are MANAGEMENT ISSUES! They are all issues which are regulated, managed or the responsibility of our provincial and federal government. Our fisheries resource is ultimately in the hands of a bunch of politicians who, for the most part, really dont know much about fish. Now I must defend the many hard working federal employees (I once was one), they do their very best every day to use the limited resources thay have to protect our fisheries resource for us...the problem is they are lame duck managers because of all the new federal policy changes including the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act, the new Wild Salmon Policy, DFO's new EPMP etc. If you familiarize yourself with these changes/documents you will get a feel for DFO's new "corporate" direction. Let me summarize it for you...not good...no budget...too much reliance on smart regulation and self-management.

My point is this...as anglers we need to unite and speak with one unified voice regarding the state of our resource. The loss or demise of a fishery should be our rallying call, we cannot just move on and expect/trust that the government will protect/restore our fisheries...they cant! There is no more appetite for enforcement! The national direction is moving toward stewardship, not investigating and charging people for criminal acts against fish and habitat! Corporate DFO is way too political motivated. They are in place to essentially manage fisheries NOT fish, therefore, they are NOT a conservation-minded entity, but instead are looking after the business of fish as commodity. DFO and MOE are cutting budgets, removing FTE's and are slowly backing away and hiding from the messy business of protecting our resource in perpetuity.

So much for the precautionary principle/approach! What about the interior fraser coho? What about the Sakinaw sockeye? What about the Thompson steelhead? What about the Skeena steelhead...yeah...now I have you thinking!

State of the Resource? You tell me, but I bet you are concerned a little more than you were before!

PLEASE DO SOMETHING! WRITE LETTERS, GET INVOLVED!! VOTE WELL!

Well been a while since my last post so I thought I should get my butt in gear. We have taken a bit of time off in January, but are now excited about fishing in 2008! During our time off we had a chance to reflect on the past year and the success (or lack of) of BCextremeHD.

There is a certain rush experienced by those behind the camera...this has to do with knowing you captured a scene or a shot that is going to make the show... knowing that piece of footage is going to blow people away and be talked about around water coolers and fishing forums! Pretty fun! This is part of the drive for us...motivation if you will. We want to be known for our contribution to the art of fishing videography not for our personal status as anglers or fishing personalities.

I think we have great personalities personally... lol- but personality only gets you so far. In my humble opinion much more respect is bestowed on those who are competent at what they do and are quick to build up others around them and deflect any credit or accolades, such as the case may be. I think we have been successful with this. Eliminating the pretentiousness common to many fishing shows was really important to us!

The best way I can explain what our project is about is a reality fishing show. Or a video blog. Kick out any acting and document an actual fishing trip with an artistic flair! Successful? You be the judge.

There are lots of fisheries in a state of decline or even collapse, so angling forecasts are generally not too promising; however, by following the information trail, we are confident that we will be able to get into some more world class angling and capture it all on camera again in 2008..Season 2 here we come!

Adrian had a couple of hits and that was it. This is quite depressing to be sure. Cutthroat are usually a gamble at the best of times; however, the spots we fished are usually quite reliable.
I have a topic which is near and dear to my heart which I would like to discuss... Yes, this is actually one of my pet peaves. Angling ethics...where have they gone? It seems that a new breed of angler has emerged. This angler is self-absorbed and conditioned to the combat-style of fishing. This new breed of angler is entirely self- serving and will think nothing of jumping in below and corking a fellow fisher working a run from the top down. Here is a recent experience of mine:

I was fishing a popular lower mainland river yesterday with a friend of mine Adrian. I chose to spey cast and Adrian was drift fishing. We found a nice long run we both liked and waded across the river and walked toward the top of the run. We met a nice gentleman in the middle of the run and walked over to chat with him. After exchanging pleasantries, we asked the guy if he was fishing down through the run then mentioned our intentions to fish down behind him. He fished down at a good clip and left. A few minutes later a guy walked out onto the bar talking on the phone and walked the length of the bar then chose to fish immediately below me! And another guy climbed in below him. Now I have two guys fishing the tailout below me, the water I have been working toward! I made another cast and the guy below me casts onto my line... I reel up and I walk away.

My thoughts:

What is a respectful distance to fish below someone?

Should the fishing technique employed by the angler above influence your decision? I say no!

What is so hard about approaching an angler already on the run to understand his intentions and ensure you are not disrupting his/her experience?

What happened to common courtesy? Not so common anymore is it!

My challenge to you: Love thy neighbor!

-peace

We stayed at the Bahia Principe all-inclusive resort. 5 star and really nice! First class all the way.

The highlight of the trip was a guided day fishing in Ascension Bay! My first day fishing for warm water species. I must say I am now a little hooked!

I rented a Jeep through the resort and drove myself the 1.5 hours from Akumal to Punta Allen. The drive was uneventful, despite seeing numerous army personnel carrying very large machine guns...a little unnerving, but not unexpected. Once I arrived in Akumal I was met by my guide, Victor Barrera at the boat dock.

Right away I could see a few baby tarpon moving around in the small lagoon the boats were kept in...I was excited!

However...once we got out to the fishing grounds fishing was slow....slow... No fish anywere! We spotted a few single bones cruizing the shoals, but nothing consistent/feeding. Now I know why flats fishers are always hoping for sunny days... no sun, no see. When the clouds rolled over I felt like Mel Gibson yelling, "give me back my son (sun)!!"

After searching a few spots for bonefish, we made a long run (45 minutes) out to the permit fishing "hot spots"...yeah...no. Not so hot, the fishing anyway. the weather was gorgeous all afternoon!

Eventually we made our way into one of the many shallow lagoons, and this time got out and worked the shoal by foot. Right away we saw a small school of bones tailing near shore. After spooking them out of the 6" deep water, we chased them around the the 1-2' deep flat for about an hour. I managed 3 hits and one landed fish (see photo below). What an adrenaline rush watching the bonefishing tailing in the shallow water! So hard to see them...like tiny sticks poking out of the water 60+ feet away! The nervous water was really cool too. Once you get the hang of it you can spot moving fish quite readily!

Overall, I had a great trip! Victor and his assistant were great. I saw a ton of cool birds , sting rays, baracuda, an aligator and some spectacular scenery. Ascension Bay is an amazing place. I recommend this trip to anyone, just make sure you go for more than one day!!!

We broke the chains of our namesake and crossed the BC border into Idaho, US. We figured as Idaho borders on BC we were OK with this one ;)

Lee Davison (CND and Snake River Outfitters) invited us to come and sample a little Idaho hospitality and steelhead fishing on the Salmon River. Both Darren and I couldn't resist...we are both ardent steelhead fishers and the opportunity to shoot a spey fishing episode was a real priority for us!

As far as spey fishing is concerned, the Salmon River is second to none. Especially when it comes to spectacular fly water...in fact it becomes a bit of a problem because there is too much nice water to fish! I can't even describe how nice the runs are...I guess you will just have to download episode 05 and see for yourself!

Should be ready before Christmas... fishing the Thompson comes before editing...sorry :)

Episode 03 was shot jet boating a BC stream fishing for bull trout (bull trout by defintion are anadromous Dolly Varden). Anyway, we had a pretty cool adventure and in typical BCextremeHD style we kept the camera rolling through a fairly stupid canyon run... and some nice big fat bullies! We threw a litte educational stuff in there to boot...more geared toward the newbie fisher.

One of the things we are very concerned about is sounding or coming across as pretentious...that is why we dont offer much in the way of advice.
Did a little fly fishing for sea run bull trout over the weekend. What a great sport fish! Agressive takes, they hold in the tail out like any self-respecting fish should and not half bad fighting ability. Bryce and I had a great trip fishing in another extremely beautiful BC river...

I noticed that most (ummm...actually all) of the fish I landed had net marks on their skin...this is quite disturbing! When you see these marks on fish you know they have been running the seasonal gauntlet of nets (commercial and FN salmon fisheries) in the Fraser River and by some miracle managed to escape!

Imagine how many fish succumb to those nets ...I mean seriously think about it. Most of the fish we hooked were in the 3-7lb range and had made it through/out of a net. What do you think are the chances of a 10lb + fish having the same fortune? probably not very good.

I have a few questions about this:

Are the commercial and FN fisheries selectively harvesting the larger bull trout?

What, if any, are the genetic consequences of losing the larger bull trout from the stock.

How many sea run bull trout are being lost to these nets? Does the provincial government know? Note: bull trout are actually an anadromous speices of char and are managed by the Ministry of Environment.

Which fisheries (i.e., sockeye and/or chum) are responsible for intercepting a higher number of this non-target species?

Should this be a conservation concern?

As you can see I am formulating some thoughts on this and am considering writing a letter to the Ministry of Environment expressing my concern about the interception of non-target species in commercial/FN net fisheries and if they are aware of the what the interception rate is...

Comments...thoughts...?

Many, many thanks to Michiel van Erp for his generous provision of some nice smooth, funky beats. Check out his site here.

We are really not too far behind in episodes though we have a prequel to Ep 01 and are about 1/4 of the way through our BC interior lake fishing episode (03)

Fishing in BC is truely second to none in terms of diversity of angling experiences available! Every day we come up with new and exciting opportunities for BCextremeHD episodes...pretty fun!

This weekend past Darren and I fly fished a BC lake up country. We were joined by good friends Gordy and Bryce. Too bad I houdinied to the wrong side of the lake and missed the good fishing...by all accounts the boys did well in my absence. Kudos to BF ("big fish") for the little clinic...the student becomes the master!

...indeed...I will return this weekend...got a cool spot to check out!

We now have a trailer for our first episode (should be up tonight) and will be launching episode 01 in the first week of April!

Episode 01 is a BC steelheading show documenting our travels to various unnamed Vancouver Island streams. We have kept the identity of the streams out of the show on purpose as it is NOT our intention to give away any "secrets". We all know how protective angler's can be about their favorite spot. The last thing we want to do is alienate veiwers by giving away their fishing hole. On the otherhand, if it is bloody obvious where we are like the Stamp...we will say so...

See we told you we had a different kind of fishing show!!

A bit more about the show. As it is recorded in HD, get ready for some pretty cool imagery! You can see the fish flash under water like never before! This is not a You Tube video.... This is a full 1440x 1080 resolution which is approximately 5-7 x the resolution of You Tube videos, over 3x the resolution of TV and over 2x the resolution of DVD!

We absolutely can't wait to show you the footage!

I actually use a home theater PC to run all of my home media (TV, movies etc...) on a Home theater projector. We have always dreamed of having our own TV show, but until recently, never imagined that we could produce one on our own (well not entirely...welcome aboard Neal)!

BCeXtremeHD is a cutting edge, no bleeding edge HDTV show which is indeed one of the first of its kind. We firmly believe that internet TV is the way of the future and soon there will be thousands of productions like ours.
