So let me fill you in..

Ascension Bay was AWESOME! I got to fight some amazingly strong, agile bonefish. ( I had a couple line burns on the fingers) What a feeling of accomplishment when you can say you have caught a few of those guys!! and my favorite, the BARACUDA!! The feeling you get when you see that 13 pound 'cuda spot your fly and instantly dart with its jaws opening under water exposing his razor sharp teeth and WHAM!! Hes gone with your fly in his mouth, your reel left screaming and your heart pumping, its like nothing else!!

What an unforgettable trip…

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 weeks in August salmon fishing (Rivers Inlet and Thasis). All I can say is salmon fishing has picked up tremendously since last year! A great amount of coho, pinks and chinook were landed and a relief that numbers are up is definitely in mind…

The picture I have posted is a 35 pound chinook caught mooching 10 feet down in 230 ft of water…go figure, I was in the middle of letting my line out!

So currently, the pinks and coho are running through the local rivers and there has been quite the fishing frenzy out there. There have been some great hook ups and has been a lot of fun! So saying that, I have been kept busy….

Stay tuned for more stories and pictures!

Jenna

Greetings! I am among the many who have great respect for Alexandra Morton and her research regarding the effects of sea lice on wild salmon. What I appreciate about Alexandra is, like any good researcher, she relies on science and the statistical interpretation of scientific data to guide her opinions and statements. I wish the same could be said for the federal and provincial governments...

I my personal opinion, federal and provincial governments have intentionally done away with considering science in decision making processes (especially when it comes to fisheries management) as science is a) expensive, b) not always conclusive, c) doesn't always generate the results wanted or expected and, d) often leads to tough politics! An example of dismissing the role of science in fisheries management is the continued slashing of fisheries stock assessment budgets! That's right... how can you make fundamentally important management decisions without understanding run escapement/recruitment numbers etc?

It is far easier for governments to turn their collective backs on science (eg., Fraser River gravel removal, missing sockeye etc.) and make outlandish claims in the media such as Paul Sprout (DFO) did the other day when he claimed that (rough quote), "salmon farms had nothing to do with the collapse of the sockeye run this year". How do you know Paul? WHERE IS THE SCIENCE/DATA BEHIND THAT STATEMENT? I understand that Alexandra requested that DFO provide the data supporting this claim. To the best of my knowledge, no data has been provided to date.

You know things are getting bad when a high ranking offical from DFO, a federal government agency which is supposed to be managing fisheries for the BENEFIT of all Canadians, is making broad unsubstantiated statement such as this.

In what political back room was it decided that the new plan was to forgo conservation and protection of our wild salmon stocks in favor of big business and economic contribution to federal/provincial coffers? How did this happen that all these high ranking political figures have such a like mind about this?

Things that make you go hmmmm... and $%#&*!

Also interesting, were Dr. Schindler's comments regarding the linkages between MDN and the health of rainbow trout and grayling populations... How about this quote for the above referenced paper... "The entire annual growth of these fish occurs in a four or five week period (during the sockeye spawning migration) and the rest of the year it appears as though the fish are losing mass".

In my mind, this type of information speaks loud and clear regarding the absolute necessity of marine derived nutrients in oligotrophic (nutrient poor) freshwater environments to ensure the continued success of resident populations.

Also makes me think that if we lose our sockeye... there could be a large devastating ripple affect up the food chain... ouch.

LINK TO ARTICLE ON MARINE DERIVED NUTRIENTS

Yet again... Seems this is happening year after year right? What is the problem? The Georgia Strait is a black hole...our local Burmuda triangle. Instead of swallowing ships and airplanes, this one devours fish!

Now considering the importance of wild salmon on the west coast of BC and indeed throughout our province, one would think that the federal and provincial governments would crawing all over themselves to ensure that any potential impediment to wild salmon survival and recruitment would be removed from their path. Makes sense right? Missing fish... well lets use the process of elimination and figure out what the problem is. Nope. Nothing. This type of action, otherwise known as the precautionary principle, is outright ignored.

Now I am not so naive to think that there is a simple solution...although there just might be...we dont know...no one is trying anything!

What about the open net pen fish farms right along the migration route of the sockeye salmon? The farmers themselves are adamant that their farms do not affect the fish, but do we know this for sure? No, no we dont, because they have not been removed or fallowed. Some how science is yet again ignored. The weight of evidence against open net pen fish farms is growing. It is time for action!

Look at the success of the Columbia River system this year! Massive returns! No net pens along those fishes migration route. Alaska, same deal. No net pens along those fishes route either. The USA wouldn't compromise such a valuable resource...

Why are we?

Hmmm...recently it has come to my attention that a short video we released (link may follow) recently on YouTube of Tim landing a 14-15lb rainbow (photo in previous post) from a BC Interior lake has caused quite a stir...

Firstly, a kind friend emailed me the other day and advised me that there were some folks (on FLYBC forum) who took strong exception to the lake being named in the opening shot. Upon reading this email I blanched and quickly proceeded to erase the video from YouTube...it had been an honest mistake. I truely just forgot to erase the lake name before posting that version online. The version with the name I had made for Tim as a keepsake... If I pissed anyone off, I truely apologize. A small lake with big trout should remain as quiet as possible to preserve the trophy fishery and I respect those who wish to keep it that way!

Secondly, most people who viewed the video appreciated it for what it was - a fellow angler who happened to get lucky one day and caught the "fish of a life time". They revelled at the sight of such a large beast and used it as fuel to head to a similar trophy lake and run the risk of getting skunked just to have the opportunity to MAYBE hook a trophy fish (anything over 8lbs I'd say). However, there were a few others who were plain sour grapes. I want to address this unsettling issue that is quite prevalent in the fishing community and, I guess, society in general... many people are miserable and find it just too hard to be happy for another angler! What is with that guys! Can we not rally around a fellow angler and simply congratulate him on landing a massive trout!? Why the negative attitude?? The forum chat turned from "wow nice fish!" to "he held it out of the water too long...". WTF? Come on guys...if you hooked that beast, you would be snapping a few photos too!

What you don't know is that Tim was continually giving that fish a "drink"...I just editted out those portions for length purposes!

So, let's think about our attitudes guys... We are all out there enjoying our favorite past-time. Let's focus on the comradery and keep our swollen egos out of it.

Trevor

Packing for a week of fishing is bad enough with all the little things you simply CANNOT forget, try packing for a video production as well...twice as FUN!

We are really getting excited now! The reports are favorable... a few super slams have occurred over the past few weeks and a couple of grand slams. Our goal is to get a video super slam...bone fish, permit, tarpon and snook on the fly and on video from the take/hook set to the release. If we can accomplish this I think we will be in the rare few. Not sure that it has been done before (all on video)?

We really are excited to bring the stunning scenery of Ascension Bay home in 1080i and to piece together two episodes... 1a and 1b.
I recently had an empassioned conversation with a few fellow anglers while heading out to do some spey casting the other day... the kind of conversation that got a little heated as we discussed the current state of the fishing resource on BC's coast. Specifically the freshwater salmon and steelhead fisheries.

As a biologist by trade I keep pretty close tabs on what is going on along our coast out of interest from a naturalist (ecological integrity) perspective, as well as a diehard angler.

I am very disturbed by what I am hearing, reading and seeing with my own eyes! I know I am not alone in this...come on, I can see you out there nodding your heads in agreement thinking about how few steelhead or coho you have caught the last few years and how you wish you were out fishing today, but you decided to stay home where it is warm to avoid the disappointment of another blank day on the water (not that I condone that line of thinking :) ).

We have so many issues that affect the state of our resource today; here is a list I compiled:

Aquaculture - Fish farms
Ocean survival - Global warming
Habitat - Riparian integrity, instream complexity, spawning areas
Maintenance of minimum flow requirements
Hydro dams - run of the river hydro Projects (IPP's)
Treaty Allocations
First Nation fisheries
Poaching
Non-indigenous species
Forest practices
Development impacts -stormwater quality and quantity

Just to name a few...if you think about it you could probably even add a few more. What is my point you ask? All except ocean survival are MANAGEMENT ISSUES! They are all issues which are regulated, managed or the responsibility of our provincial and federal government. Our fisheries resource is ultimately in the hands of a bunch of politicians who, for the most part, really dont know much about fish. Now I must defend the many hard working federal employees (I once was one), they do their very best every day to use the limited resources thay have to protect our fisheries resource for us...the problem is they are lame duck managers because of all the new federal policy changes including the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act, the new Wild Salmon Policy, DFO's new EPMP etc. If you familiarize yourself with these changes/documents you will get a feel for DFO's new "corporate" direction. Let me summarize it for you...not good...no budget...too much reliance on smart regulation and self-management.

My point is this...as anglers we need to unite and speak with one unified voice regarding the state of our resource. The loss or demise of a fishery should be our rallying call, we cannot just move on and expect/trust that the government will protect/restore our fisheries...they cant! There is no more appetite for enforcement! The national direction is moving toward stewardship, not investigating and charging people for criminal acts against fish and habitat! Corporate DFO is way too political motivated. They are in place to essentially manage fisheries NOT fish, therefore, they are NOT a conservation-minded entity, but instead are looking after the business of fish as commodity. DFO and MOE are cutting budgets, removing FTE's and are slowly backing away and hiding from the messy business of protecting our resource in perpetuity.

So much for the precautionary principle/approach! What about the interior fraser coho? What about the Sakinaw sockeye? What about the Thompson steelhead? What about the Skeena steelhead...yeah...now I have you thinking!

State of the Resource? You tell me, but I bet you are concerned a little more than you were before!

PLEASE DO SOMETHING! WRITE LETTERS, GET INVOLVED!! VOTE WELL!
